Homeschooling vs. Public Schooling
We are at a crossroads here. We are trying to decide whether we should homeschool....it is still legal in Nevada.....or send our children to the school across the street. We are just worried about all the "agendas" that we feel are not appropriate for kids being pushed on them eventually. Luckily, our school district is very conservative but it could be just a matter of time before our children can be indoctrinated into certain ideas that we don't want them to deal with at their young ages. As a teacher myself, I have always thought that going to school is the best but then we had two of our own! We are registering our daughter for Kindergarten at the school across the street for next year but wanted to know everyone's opinion.

My thoughts are a bit conflicted on this one. I do think that eventually kids have to live in the world and interact with their peers and so they should learn how to do this while they have some good parental guidance. On the other hand, this doesn't have to happen when they are 5 years old.
I have several friends who LOVE home schooling. And lots who won't think of it. The thing I have learned is that it takes a few weeks to discover if you can do it, if the program you chose is the one for you. And, you don't have to stick with it for 12 years if it doesn't work for you. One friend tried it and it didn't work. Her children are in public school now and are fine. So what is your goal? Do you want to "protect" them from everything "outside", are you feeling "called" to home school, do you feel the schools have a poor curriculum? What is your goal? A good balance may be to home school the reading, writing, arithmetic stuff, but involve your kiddos in some things like sports, dance, gymnastics, piano, whatever to expose them to peers where they can use/test the values they have learned at home.
I too am trying to decide about home schooling and public school...
I haven't come to any real conclusion other than I know some people who do home schooling really well and some who do it really poorly. The same can be said for public school, the uninvolved parents versus the very involved...
I have considered the option of something other than home school or public school... a good charter, Waldorf, Montessori, a co-op school... Not living in a big city limits these options, but I want to look into them more.
dana- you should immediately move within the "big city" limits.
i fantasize of buying 2 houses with adjoining backyards and 4 sets of feet running in and out of our backdoors throughout the day. even a family-shared clothesline and alternating who cooks dinner. dude, we could even share a car...

Rae--you are SO funny... ME in the city??? Right. How about we share country home backyards? We could share the sheep, cows, chickens, etc... We could form our own school and, and... :)
dana... ME in the country??? maybe when hell freezes over. i need to know that the zoo is up the hill, the park is around the corner, and the grocery store is within walking distance. i'm already on zoloft- country life just sounds like more crazy-making to me. :)
i'll be an urban farmer though!
